It’s December and naturally it’s the time I start looking back and reflect on the past 12 months and start looking forward to the next 12. From this past year, the photoshoot that stands out to me the most has been hands down the Sea2See Sustainable Fashion photoshoot done at the end of July.

Sea2See Seastainable Fashion Photoshoot, July 2021

I pitched the concept, produced, photographed and retouched this entire campaign. Usually I don’t like to wear so many hats and I prefer to work with other talented individuals who are all coming together to create the work, but not all shoot have the budget or scope of work to support it. In the case of this shoot, it’s was a concept that has been developing over time (several months) so when it came time to shoot, everything was already in place and only had to be executed.

I became acquainted with Sea2See a couple of years ago from my PLASTIC SURF project, because my images supported their brand. Most of our conversations over the years have been through e-mail and social media direct messages (DM) so when asked to pitch a couple of different concepts for a shoot came up, I was thrilled. A created some rough sketches of 5 different ideas that I thought would work. The Seastainable Fashion Shoot is what was determined to be the best concept and could incorporate some of the backdrops into the shoot to show the shoot itself as part of the concept. By engineering the shoot with shooting on location with a backdrop allowed for me to capture different types of images at the sometime through the natural flow of the shoot to effectively use our time for creating.

The concept for this shoot was to keep it very fashion oriented and have the images ability to appeal to the fashion industry. So doing a VOUGE themed fashion shoot, seemed natural. The products themselves are created from ocean trash, collected mostly in Africa but the finished eyewear (glasses) are created in Italy and the timepieces (watches) are made in Switzerland. The shoot needed to portray a contrast within the images to show the negative impact of ocean plastic floating in the water with the beauty of the finished product being worn on models. I had respect for the company when starting this shoot but my respect has grown throughout the production of this campaign because multiple times it was mentioned that the concept of the shoot needed to be focused on the trash and not the product. The message to the viewing audience was to inform about the negative impact plastic trash has on the environment, instead of the finished products that were created from the waste. The company Sea2See is based in Barcelona, Spain and the shoot would be taking place in San Diego, California. With such a distance between the company and the photoshoot the client was not going to be able to attend the shoot, so the ability to pull of the shoot and take full responsibility was left up to me to make sure it was executed correctly.

Hero Shot from Sea2See Seastainable Fashion Photoshoot, July 2021

By having such a a hands-on approach with this shoot allowed me to make sure the original intent from the initial pitch was not lost along the way. Although I don’t shoot fashion as my main genre of photography, the conceptual approach to this campaign allowed me to feel right at home create images that were supported by concept, yet giving me the ability to explore a genre I admire. All of the images created for this campaign could not have been done without an amazing crew. Behind every Photographer is a strong crew who deserves to be recognized. For me on this shoot it was:

Penelope Olds – Wardrobe Stylist

Logan McArthur – Waredrobe Stylist Assistant

Natalie Bohlin – Hair and Makeup Artist (HMUA)

Kristy Walker – BTS Video & Cinematographer

Eric Arnold & Teresa Fae – Photo Assistants

Anastacia N, Kallila S, Chase H and Lexi G – Models

If you have any questions about this shoot, please reach out and ask. Being able to speak to others about what I do and why is all part of the process.
