To commemorate their 50th anniversary, Peet’s Coffee & Tea asked Noel Barnhurst to create and photograph a solid “gold” bean along with a few of their signature drinks.

This project required extra creativity because creating and shooting a bean, especially one that’s made of what appears to be gold, isn’t as easy as it might sound. After several rounds of trial and error, Noel’s second assistant, Pete, whipped up the amazing bean seen in the final imagery.

According to Pete, “The challenge was preserving the detail of the bean’s nooks and crannies because we were shooting so close up. Ordinary gold leaf techniques made the bean look clogged up and goopy.”
