Meet Lucas Saugen

Lucas is a San Francisco still-life and product lifestyle photographer specializing in tech, med tech, electronics, and apparel.

“I thrive when confronted with tough-to-solve problems from lighting to propping and set up. I’ve been known to build a rig or two to get a precise angle. I work collaboratively with clients, agencies, stylists, and art directors to elevate product and show it in a natural context. I live in San Francisco with my family and our rescued Dogue de Bordeaux, Agent Butterscotch. I really enjoy rehabilitating our house and have recently learned to tile.”

Case Study Breakdown

Client ::
Eko Health is a leading med tech company advancing how healthcare professionals detect and monitor heart and lung disease with its portfolio of digital stethoscopes and AI detection platform, SENSORA™. By combining cutting-edge technology with clinical insight, Eko is transforming the way cardiopulmonary care is delivered. Eko Health is headquartered in Emeryville, CA.

Ask ::
I’ve had the good fortune to work with Eko in the past.  They reached out because they were looking to revamp their website with a consistent, elevated look and feel through stills and videos. They were looking for a ton of shots (both stills and motion) in multiple medical facilities and home care settings to kit out their site. They also wanted a wide variety of talent to reflect their customers and the patients they treat. Budget was tight, and we were limited to two days of shooting and a single prep day.

Challenges & Solutions ::
I started to look at all of the puzzle pieces and figured the only way to solve the need for such a wide range of locations and the need for a consistent look and feel was to  build sets in studio utilizing existing elements of the building. We brought in walls and utilized the windows and counters of the studio. Shooting in studio also allowed us to be very nimble with our talent and their availability. We shot each talent on a variety of sets and scenarios efficiently.

While the budget was lean, the biggest challenge for the shoot was the comprehensive shot list. It was a large workload for such a small crew. We took an agile approach and learned where to find efficiencies and how to approach re-prioritizing. We had a great crew that made every nook and cranny of the studio feel like a unique space thanks to styling, lighting, and creative angles. We were able to create 9 unique sets and deliver more than 80 stills and 15 motion assets–it was worth it, the impact to their site is impressive.
