What a tremendous body (literally) of work. Just a fabulous long-term project. : Ken Geiger
Company/Studio: Schatz/Ornstein Studio
Date of Photograph: A 30-year study to 2021
I have studied over 200 children from childhood into their 20’s. I began some when they were newborns; I started photographing others about the time they could read and write. For all of them, I made annual studio portraits and asked them to write answers to a series of questions, a kind of diary about their lives, their feelings, their hopes, their regrets. I am interested in everything about human development, fascinated by maturation, growth, emotional, educational, and physical development. This exploration has been a major 30 year odyssey that has yielded riches beyond my initial imagining.

Awards:
1st place for Professional Advertising, Product (iWatch Series 6)
2nd place for Professional Advertising, Automotive (McLaren P1 GTR)
2nd Place for Professional Nature, Macro (ExoSkeleton)

The ExoSkeleton project has taken me over a year and 10 months to complete. 1 of 3 prototype equipment from ALPA was used on some of the most pristine specimens from the private collection of the Natural History Museum of San Diego. Over an hour of specimen cleaning and lighting set up, 7 hours of continuous shooting, over 14 hours of converting the IIQ Phase One files to TIFF, over 10 hours to flatten the TIFF files and the most time spent on post production of 86 hours (average was 54 hours per specimen). This was the first time that insects were shot in such detail and on a medium format camera.
