Title: “No Bad Questions”
Tech: Contax 645/ Phase One P45+ / Profoto
About: Used motor oil is a low-interest category. But when people do take an interest, they usually have lots of questions. To get the conversation started, the BC Used Oil Management Association shared some of the quirkier questions they’ve been asked over the years. Questions like “Why can’t I just burn my used motor oil?”, “Can used motor oil be used as an essential oil?” or, “Is used motor oil good on leather?” These questions were posed by an equally quirky cast of characters to catch the attention of BC Used Oil’s audience and let them know there’s more to learn.

Title: “Memory of Absence”
About: So much of who we are is passed from generation to generation—our genes, our behaviors—molded by our family. In 2017, my mother and father—who had not lived together for 50 years—died within three days of each other. I discovered many artifacts from my life of which I had no memory of. In this series, I combined botanicals with objects and photographs that I found, in order to convey a sense of memory and loss. The organic and volatile botanicals serve as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of memory and emotions—an unstable and profoundly unreliable process.

Title: “Covid Diaries”
About: I have struggled to process the sheer magnitude of the Coronavirus. In the beginning of the pandemic, I spent every day on the NY Times website, obsessively tracking Covid’s spread. However, I grew concerned that the headlines, charts and graphs used to convey the scale of the virus were unequipped to convey the emotional toll that the virus took. I began to collect and photograph these fragments of the news, hoping to imbue these numerical figures with the humanity they sought to represent. These photos are a visual diary-of covid, the politics of the time and the way they affect our lives.
