So, it’s impossible for me to talk about my origins without talking about Greenpoint Brooklyn. My time there was transformative both personally and professionally. It’s where my family is from. It’s where I paid my dues. It’s where I made lifelong friends. It’s where I found endless inspiration and, most importantly, my wife. Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world… But this is not about a bar. This is about an apartment. Greenpoint used to be split into two neighborhoods: the Irish and the Polish. My mother grew up on the Irish side, on Clifford Place, and moved to the Polish side when she married my father. This is the top unit of our family building where they lived as a young couple, and then where I lived for years, first as a bachelor and then as a newlywed. Brooklyn is an indelible part of my soul. The photos below are of the apartment on Monitor Street where I lived, first my grandmothers room just before we moved her out, a statue in McGolrick Park, and finally a snowy night as seen from my window looking out toward Manhattan.
