The Concept & Setting

In August 2025, Alaska’s Kenai River witnessed an unprecedented natural phenomenon: a record-breaking 4.4 million sockeye salmon surging upstream—dwarfing the previous 2024 record of 2.7 million.

Partnering with a commercial client, Karsten embarked on a five-day float trip along the river. Combining backcountry expedition logistics with high-end lifestyle stills and motion capture, the team rigged inflatable rafts, set up remote glamping campsites, and navigated varying weather and river conditions to document this liquid ballet of wildlife.

Technical & On-Location Execution

Capturing dynamic motion and high-volume wildlife requires both creative adaptability and seamless production management in rugged environments:

  • Location Scouting & Transitions: From flying into Anchorage and driving the winding Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm—where pods of beluga whales were feeding on incoming salmon—to floating deep, isolated river stretches accessible only by raft.

  • Complex Lighting & Water Conditions: Tracking fast-moving target species through flickering light, river refraction, and deep currents using polarizers, high-speed shutter setups, and aerial/motion framing.
