NORTH NORTHWEST is an exquisite, large format book that captures the brilliant essence of Julian Calverley’s stunning work. The simple goal of the book is to depict and present Julian’s marvelously rich landscape works, all of which were created during multiple trips to the Scottish Highlands and Islands over the past decade. Locations include the Isle of Skye, Sutherland, Glen Orchy, Glen Etive, Torridon, the Isle of Eigg and the Isle of Harris.

The book is an A3 landscape format case bound book printed with the Vivid Colour ™ process for mesmerizing and visually striking image reproduction. It is designed by Les Welch, printed and produced by Boss Print in NW London, and published by Concentric Editions, with forewords by Alan Moore and Bruce Percy.

Large and imposing like Julian’s landscapes, the book uses craft binding and embossing techniques, as well as super high definition print reproduction, to allow the reader to fully engage with Julian’s beautifully crafted work.

“The patented Vivid Colour ™ process enabled us to reproduce Julian’s work to an extremely high standard, almost identical in look and feel to his original RGB files. This is something which previously wasn’t possible with conventional CMYK printing processes.  A combination of hi screen ruling and expanded colour gamut printing, ensures that images are reproduced as closely as possible to the original, enabling very fine detail and extremely accurate colour and depth.”

North Northwest’ has won two awards: Best British Book and Book of the Year at the British Book Design & Production Awards: “A fantastic 101 books made it onto the shortlist, but only 19 winners could be crowned. ‘North Northwest’ was the star of the night, triumphing in the Best British Book category and winning the title of overall Book of the Year.”

The judges commented that “Even amongst the highest of competition, this entry captivated us. There was not one element that did not fit in. The book was seamlessly put together as a whole with beautiful production and design, making it a truly worthy winner.”

ABOUT JULIAN CALVERLEY:

Julian is one of the UKs top advertising, landscape and location photographers with many years’ experience and countless industry awards. His unique ability to create striking visual identities and memorable campaigns has gained him an outstanding reputation with clients worldwide. He has been featured numerous times in Lürzer’s Archive ‘200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide‘ and is a Brand Ambassador for AtEdge.

With a personal love for the great outdoors and over three decades of experience in professional photography, Julian has become one of the most revered landscape photographers. Hooked from an early age by the breath-taking beauty of the Scottish Highlands, he has carved out a unique cinematic style of landscape photography that is instantly recognizable.

Julian is drawn to the light quality that autumn and winter bring, repeatedly working at dawn and dusk, experiencing the spirit of a place as the sun rises and sets. Visiting these environments time and time again, often in extreme weather, allows him to witness the elements in all their different states. One element in particular – water, both in liquid and cloud form – features heavily in his compositions. By using long shutter speeds, Julian brings the movement of water into his landscape work, harnessing the beauty and motion of mountain rivers, streams, shorelines and skies.

His extensive post-production skills are then applied, with many hours devoted to each image. As a result, the finished pieces command a theatrical air, their atmospheric conditions beautifully observed.
