My job is often times equal parts curiosity and experimentation. I love taking old tricks and reinventing them in crazy new ways to create new effects. I had seen photographers use sparklers and pyro techniques to create sparks but I wanted to find a way to make the sparks more substantial, and have more energy. When Laurie Brookins@stylewriternyc, editor at Niche Media at the time, reached out to me with a fine jewelry story and asked me to pitch some ideas, I took it as the perfect opportunity to play with fire. We wound up using a handheld metal grinder and experimented all day with different techniques. Some were done with the pieces in place and some were composited. It was a fun shoot and it turned out great. I’m glad Laurie trusted me on this one!
