Max Hirschfeld was commissioned by The Smithsonian to provide the official portrait of Larry Small, the 11th Secretary of the Smithsonian.
The first nine portraits of Secretaries were oil paintings and Max’s image of Secretary Small is only the second photograph to be commissioned. The first photo, shot by Arnold Newman, was of Michael Heyman, the 10th Secretary.
