The Getty Center in Los Angeles has recently opened a fantastic retrospective on the photography of Ray Metzker and his contemporaries. The collection covers half a century, tracing Metzker’s career and how his work influenced an era of photographers. Metzker graduated from the Institute of Design in Chicago; it was while studying here that Metzker’s style began to take shape. Always in black and white, Ray Metzker’s images transcend the banal by morphing it into something beautifully abstract, or at least absurd.
