Not to be confused with the bustling New York noodle house “Ippudo,” Ippodo, is a traditional Japanese teahouse located in East Midtown, Murray Hill. We were first turned on to the teahouse by a Los Angeles friend who has sent his friends all over Japan to retrieve tea so he can save on shipping. Recent trips have sent willing explorers to Shinjuku, Hakodate, Shibuya, and now New York. Some people are SERIOUS about their green tea! And once you have a bowl of matcha from Ippodo, you will understand why.
Matcha has been trending on the ingredient list for quite some time now, mainly in light desserts. But the cream and sugar that is often added to the matcha subtracts from the depth of the flavor and over all robustness. The best was to understand it is head to Ippodo and try it for yourself. There is a whole culture behind Matcha and Sencha, but beware. If you get sucked into it, it can start to cost a pretty penny depending on the grade and preparation of the leaves and powder.
Ippodo is located at 125 East 39th Street between Park Ave. and Lexington Ave. If you are heading there with kids, be sure to try the little green slushy.
